What are Dermal Fillers and Injectables?

Dermal filler injections, sometimes called injectable fillers or facial fillers, are non-surgical aesthetic treatments that improve the health, condition, and appearance of the skin and facial features. There are many formulas, each targeting specific conditions and specific areas of the face or body. Treatment results in some cases may last up to two years.

What Conditions Do Dermal Fillers and Injectables Treat?

Almost any healthy adult in good overall health may be an ideal candidate for an injectable dermal filler treatment, but dermal fillers are especially recommended for individuals who want to treat the following conditions:

  • Acne and acne scars
  • Deep nasolabial folds extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth
  • Sagging skin and flat cheekbones in the mid-face region
  • Thin, flat, undefined lips
  • Wrinkles, creases, and lines anywhere on the face
  • Vertical lines around the lip line, known as “smoker’s lines”

What Are the Advantages of Dermal Injection Treatments?

Dermal fillers are safe for most healthy adults. They are quickly and easily administered, inexpensive, versatile, and provide a quick and valuable cosmetic solution that delivers immediate results. In some cases, continued gradual improvement is seen for several months. Facial filler treatments take less than an hour to administer and require no downtime. Some treatments require multiple sessions, and some treatments produce gradual improvements, but typically, you will see visible improvement after one treatment. Injectable treatments are versatile and easily combined with one another. You may also choose fillers as a standalone procedure, or combine them with other procedures, such as liposuction  or plastic surgery , to enhance the results.

What Types of Injectables Can I Choose From?

There are many formulations and types of injectable treatments, each targeting different conditions and different parts of the face. Our expert aesthetician will advise you about the most suitable treatment or combination of treatments to accomplish your aesthetic goals. Typically, we use Juvederm® Ultra Plus to treat nasolabial folds and parenthesis lines in the lower face, and Voluma® to restore volume in the cheeks. But we also use the following dermal fillers and injectables:

How Do Dermal Fillers and Injectables Work?

Typically, we numb the treatment area with a topical anesthetic to ensure your maximum comfort, and treatments are administered using a very fine needle. When treating fine lines and wrinkles on the surface of the skin, the filler is injected into the skin’s outermost layers, while deeper folds and creases require deeper injections. Some patients experience a mild stinging sensation during treatment.

What Can I Expect After a Dermal Filler Treatment?

You may experience some swelling or soreness immediately following treatment, but these symptoms are minor and will clear up naturally within a day or two. Occasionally, bruising can persist for several days. Injectables require no downtime and you may typically resume normal activities immediately after your treatment session. We do advise that no vigorous exercise is done for 24 hrs.
